You’re dreaming of eloping in Yosemite and now it’s time to choose where to have your ceremony. One of the most iconic features in the park is Half Dome, a geological formation that looks exactly like it’s name – half a dome, and one of the easiest places to view Half Dome is at Glacier Point. Here’s all the pros and cons of eloping at Glacier Point.

Pros of Eloping at Glacier Point

• Sunrise is absolutely banging at Glacier Point! There’s absolutely dreamy light at sunrise making your photos look magical and it’s the time of day with the fewest crowds.
• Easy access. Most of Glacier Point can be accessed by a short walk on leveled paths with plenty of parking nearby.
• The Glacier Point Amphitheater is on the approved elopement ceremony locations list for Yosemite and can accommodate up to 50 guests.
• There are plenty of secluded areas around the area where we can go for a completely private experience.
• Those epic photos you’ve seen where it looks like the couple is standing on the edge of the cliffs with Half Dome in the background are at Glacier Point!
• Walk the nearby trails for access to Taft Point, Washburn Point, Sentinel Dome, and beautiful views of the high country forest. Trail lengths vary.
• Want to stamp your marriage license or elopement announcement with the Yosemite passport stamp? There’s a visitor center here where you can do that.
• Depending on your cell carrier, you can actually get some service at the top of Glacier Point. Perfect if you want to FaceTime or Zoom family to celebrate with them from afar.
• At sunset, pink/orange alpenglow can often be seen on Half Dome making it a spectacular way to end out your elopement day.

Cons of Eloping at Glacier Point

• Glacier Point is only accessible after Memorial Day until September 30 (weather dependent on snow). No elopements are allowed at the amphitheater in July and August.
• With the ease of access, there are always going to be other folks up at Glacier Point. Your ceremony at the amphitheater won’t be super private. If you don’t mind random hikers and visitors cheering after your first kiss then not a problem. Both Yosemite itself (it’s on the website) and I recommend sunrise for the least busy time of day.
• Mid-day at Glacier Point is very busy. Afternoon ceremonies should plan extra time to allow for traffic in the parking lot.
• There are only vault toilets in this area. If you don’t want to be using a port-a-potty in your wedding attire you’ll need to plan accordingly.
• Your dogs may or may not be able to attend your elopement here. While parts of the Yosemite website say dogs are allowed only on paved areas (which Glacier Point is), the ceremony location list says no pets allowed. We’d have to check with the park on current regulations at the time of your elopement.
• The Glacier Point Amphitheater is large. With space for 50 guests, it can feel vast for smaller groups. Most guests choose to stand closer to the couple instead of sitting on the stone benches.
• For groups between 30-50 guests, you’ll have to pay for additional monitoring from the park.
• Due to the high elevation (7214 ft), storms can happen causing road closures outside of the seasonal winter closure.

Is it worth it?

Heck yes! The views and easy access make Glacier Point such a banger. But personally I would only elope here at sunrise. At sunrise you not only get the most epic light for photos, but it’s also the most peaceful and least crowded time of day in this area. If I wanted a more secluded area for an elopement that still had epic views of Half Dome I’d check out Sentinel Dome and North Dome. More info on these two hidden gems here.
