Alright, let’s start with my biggest piece of advice: Hire a photographer! There’s nothing quite like capturing the exact moment your partner says “YES” with real, candid photos that you’ll treasure forever. And it’s not just about snapping a few pictures. A photographer (like me!) is your behind-the-scenes sidekick, helping you scout locations, plan the perfect timing, and making sure every detail goes off without a hitch.

When Bruno started planning his proposal for Amanda in Peek-a-boo Canyon, we were on the phone countless times, mapping out every little detail to make sure it was flawless. Having a photographer in on the surprise means you get an ally to handle logistics, calm your nerves, and capture every sweet moment.

Pick a Location That Means Something 

Choosing the right spot to propose is key. Think about places your partner loves or somewhere that holds special memories. It could be a destination you’ve always wanted to visit, an adventure you both would enjoy, or a tour you’ve been eyeing—whatever makes the moment feel personal and meaningful. The goal is to choose a location that resonates with both of you and makes the proposal unforgettable.

For Bruno, the choice was easy: Amanda’s favorite place on earth is the red rock desert. So we went with the stunning Peek-a-boo Canyon in Southern Utah, where those towering red walls and soft morning light made the perfect setting. Thinking of proposing in a popular spot or somewhere remote? You might need extra time to secure permits, book accommodations, or plan travel. And, of course, don’t forget to factor in the best lighting—sunrise and sunset are absolute magic in certain locations if you’re looking for those golden, glowy photos.

Disguise Your Intentions

A key part of a surprise proposal is, of course, keeping it a secret! The trick is to plan an activity that makes sense so your partner doesn’t suspect anything. For example, if your partner loves hiking, plan a “casual hike” to a beautiful overlook or canyon. Or, if they’re a foodie, you could plan a special dinner or picnic in a scenic location, making it feel like a fun and adventurous date day. The options are endless! 

When Bruno proposed, we disguised the proposal as an adventurous off-roading trip to the canyons and sand boarding with Razors Edge Tours during their vacation. Even with the best-laid plans, things can sometimes go sideways. Weather, crowds, or unexpected obstacles can pop up, especially in outdoor locations. Always have a Plan B so that you’re not stressed if something doesn’t go as expected.

B- I honestly didn’t know where to start! From the beginning, Clarissa offered way more than just photography—she provided guidance on how to plan a proposal, consultation, and honest advice to turn my idea into reality.
