So, you’re ready to ask the big question—congratulations! Planning the perfect proposal is one of the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) moments of your life, and if you’re dreaming of a proposal that’s as adventurous as your relationship, you’re in the right place. Whether it’s in a secluded slot canyon or at the top of a mountain, I’ve got all the tips on how to plan a proposal that will leave your partner speechless! Let’s dive in.
Hire a Photographer to Capture the Moment
Alright, let’s start with my biggest piece of advice: Hire a photographer! There’s nothing quite like capturing the exact moment your partner says “YES” with real, candid photos that you’ll treasure forever. And it’s not just about snapping a few pictures. A photographer (like me!) is your behind-the-scenes sidekick, helping you scout locations, plan the perfect timing, and making sure every detail goes off without a hitch.
When Bruno started planning his proposal for Amanda in Peek-a-boo Canyon, we were on the phone countless times, mapping out every little detail to make sure it was flawless. Having a photographer in on the surprise means you get an ally to handle logistics, calm your nerves, and capture every sweet moment.
Pick a Location That Means Something
Choosing the right spot to propose is key. Think about places your partner loves or somewhere that holds special memories. It could be a destination you’ve always wanted to visit, an adventure you both would enjoy, or a tour you’ve been eyeing—whatever makes the moment feel personal and meaningful. The goal is to choose a location that resonates with both of you and makes the proposal unforgettable.
For Bruno, the choice was easy: Amanda’s favorite place on earth is the red rock desert. So we went with the stunning Peek-a-boo Canyon in Southern Utah, where those towering red walls and soft morning light made the perfect setting. If you need help picking that perfect spot, let’s brainstorm together to find a place that reflects your story!
Give Yourself Time to Plan (But Don’t Stress)
The beauty of planning a surprise proposal is that you can take as much or as little time as you need. Bruno and I planned his proposal about four months ahead, but whether you need weeks or months really depends on your vision.
Thinking of proposing in a popular spot or somewhere remote? You might need extra time to secure permits, book accommodations, or plan travel. And, of course, don’t forget to factor in the best lighting—sunrise and sunset are absolute magic in certain locations if you’re looking for those golden, glowy photos.
Disguise Your Intentions
A key part of a surprise proposal is, of course, keeping it a secret! The trick is to plan an activity that makes sense so your partner doesn’t suspect anything. For example, if your partner loves hiking, plan a “casual hike” to a beautiful overlook or canyon. Or, if they’re a foodie, you could plan a special dinner or picnic in a scenic location, making it feel like a fun and adventurous date day. The options are endless!
When Bruno proposed, we disguised the proposal as an adventurous off-roading trip to the canyons and sand boarding with Razors Edge Tours during their vacation. This allowed Amanda to be completely in the moment and genuinely surprised when Bruno got down on one knee. Check out this blog to read more about their surprise proposal!
Have a Backup Plan Because Life Happens
Even with the best-laid plans, things can sometimes go sideways. Weather, crowds, or unexpected obstacles can pop up, especially in outdoor locations. Always have a Plan B so that you’re not stressed if something doesn’t go as expected.
This is where having a local photographer is a game-changer. I’ve got plenty of backup spots and ideas up my sleeve if we need to adjust on the fly.
Don’t Forget the Logistics!
If you’re planning a proposal in a national park or a protected area, check for permits and regulations ahead of time. Peek-a-boo Canyon, for instance, has some guidelines, especially during busy seasons. Planning ahead for things like transportation, timing, and even what to wear can save a ton of stress on the day of. I’m here to help you navigate all those details to make it as smooth as possible.
Add Personal Touches to Make It Yours
Here’s your chance to really personalize the moment. Think about what would make your partner’s heart melt—whether that’s including their favorite flowers, playing a meaningful song, bringing along your pup, or surprising them with family and friends for the big moment. It’s the little things that will make the experience feel like it was made just for them.
Soak in the Moment
The planning, the nerves, the excitement—it’s all part of the magic. But when the time finally comes, try to relax and enjoy it. Trust me, the look on your partner’s face and that “YES!” moment is something you’ll never forget. Breathe, be present, and soak it all in. And don’t let the adventure end there—whether it’s finishing off the tour, trying something fun like sandboarding, or taking a moment to enjoy a picnic with a bottle of champagne to celebrate, savor the rest of the day together. You’ve just created a memory for a lifetime, so make the most of every moment after the proposal too!
Some Love From Amanda and Bruno
B- I honestly didn’t know where to start! From the beginning, Clarissa offered way more than just photography—she provided guidance on how to plan a proposal, consultation, and honest advice to turn my idea into reality. I wanted to propose at one of my girlfriend’s bucket list spots, and Clarissa went above and beyond to find the perfect location, tour guide, and even the best time of day for lighting.
She was with me every step of the 3-4 months of planning, handling all my questions and worries. After the proposal, she went the extra mile to capture additional shots and even joined in on some sand dune fun. Within 24 hours, we had sneak peek photos to share with friends and family. As a hobbyist photographer myself, I’m super picky, but Clarissa nailed it. Do yourselves a favor—bask in the moment and let her capture it.
A- Oh man, where do I begin? For starters, I had no idea about Clarissa and her talent until after our photoshoot because it was my surprise proposal! So to say I was completely out of my comfort zone is an understatement and Clarissa couldn’t have made the experience any better for me. She was fun, energetic, caring and really made my fiancé and I feel so special and loved during the entire shoot. Her photos speak for themselves – she is exceptional!!! I’m beyond grateful for Clarissa and her talent for capturing such a special moment in our lives. I couldn’t recommend her more!
