Everything you need for a stress-free, wildly beautiful, totally-you wedding day in the great outdoors.
Eloping isn’t about “skipping” a wedding, it’s about creating one that’s 100% true to you two. Sure, your to-do list might be shorter than a big traditional wedding, but there are still some important pieces to plan — like choosing your perfect ceremony spot, finding your dream attire, booking vendors who get your vision, and making it all legal with your marriage license. The good news? Planning your dream elopement doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. This step-by-step elopement checklist will help you stay organized and stress-free so you can focus on what really matters: celebrating your love, your way. Think of it as a flexible roadmap you can make your own, no matter where in the world you choose to say “I do.”

1. Dream & Decide on Your Elopement Vision
Before anything else, get clear on what you want your day to feel like. Do you picture a quiet sunrise hike, just the two of you? Or a golden-hour ceremony with a handful of your closest family?
Think about:
- The overall vibe — adventurous, cozy, romantic, playful, or all of the above.
- Who you want there (if anyone).
- How much hiking/adventure/activities you want to include.
This is the foundation for every other decision.

2. Choose Your Location
Once you know your vision, it’s time to find the perfect setting.
- National parks, remote beaches, mountain summits, or even your favorite local trail can all make magical elopement spots. Need ideas? I’ve got your back!
- Consider the season — snow, wildflowers, or fall colors can completely change the vibe.
- Research accessibility, trail length, and any permit requirements.
I can help you find hidden-gem spots and avoid tourist crowds!

3. Book Your Vendors
Lock in your dream team early — especially if you’re eloping somewhere popular during peak season.
- Photographer: (Hi!!) Someone who knows your location and can help plan your day.
- Officiant: Unless you’re self-solemnizing in a state that allows it, you’ll need one (I also officiate!).
- Hair & Makeup Artist: Optional, but a fun way to feel pampered and photo-ready.
- Florist: A bouquet or boutonniere can add so much beauty and personality to your day.
Many of my couples keep their vendor list small so the focus stays on the experience.

4. Get Your Permits & Marriage License
Every park, forest, or beach has its own rules, and I’ll help you navigate them.
- Permits: Many outdoor spots require a special-use permit for weddings. Apply early!
- Marriage License: Every state (and country) has different rules about timing, IDs, and witnesses. Figure out whether you’ll need to get your license at home or at your elopement destination.

5. Plan Your Travel & Lodging
If you’re eloping away from home:
- Look into the best seasons for your location to avoid crowds or harsh weather.
- Arrive at least 1–2 days early to settle in and adjust to altitude/time zone changes.
- Book lodging close to your ceremony spot to cut down on travel time the day-of.
For local elopements, consider making a weekend out of it — you deserve the full experience!

6. Plan Your Elopement Timeline & Activities
Your elopement can be anything you want:
- Sunrise hike + tea by the lake.
- Midday ceremony + picnic lunch.
- Jeep tour + cliffside champagne.
Within my elopement packages, I help you design a timeline that flows naturally, feels like you, leaves room for spontaneity, and makes the most of gorgeous light for photos. Check out this blog for some timeline examples.

7. Choose Your Attire & Gear
Your outfit should match your location and adventure level:
- Hiking boots under your dress? Yes please.
- Layers for mountain weather? Absolutely.
- Fabrics that won’t wrinkle in a backpack? Lifesaver.
Don’t forget gear like headlamps, a blanket for snuggling, or a thermos of hot cocoa.

8. Pack & Prepare
Use this elopement checklist to make sure you have all the essentials packed and ready for your adventure.
Essentials:
- Marriage license & IDs
- Vow books + pens
- Rings
- Attire (in a garment bag)

Trust your planning, lean into the adventure, and savor every moment. If you’d like someone to capture those genuine laughs, tears, and quiet connections, I’d be honored to be there with you, turning your story into timeless memories.
