MARIE & GAVIN’S ADVENTUROUS ICELAND ENGAGEMENT SESSION ON A BLACK SAND BEACH | ICELAND ADVENTURE ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER | VIK, ICELAND

A travel hack I tell all my clients, friends, and family is to have your engagement (or any kind of!) photos taken while you’re already on vacation! That way you get awesome professional photos of both this special season and your trip – it’s a win win. Marie and Gavin were all in for an Iceland engagement session while they vacationing the southern region of the country. We got to meet up on the famous black sand beach Reynisfjara just outside of Vik, and boy was it magical! But also a little nerve wracking…

This beach is known for its black sand, sweeping basalt columns, a cave, distant sea stacks, and sneaker waves. Yes, you read that correctly – sneaker waves. While this beach is stunning visually, it’s also know for waves of uncharacteristic intensity that seemingly come out of nowhere. These waves are infamous for surprising folks and pulling them under and into a battering rip current where many drown… There are warning signs all along the trail advising all to not go near the water’s edge, watch the tides, and be more cautious than you think is necessary. If you plan to visit Reynisfjara, please take your safety seriously!

So while we were playing around on the beach, Marie and Gavin never got anywhere near the water. The larger sea cave and many of the basalt columns were inaccessible due to the tide at the time. (And I was always keeping one eye on the waves just in case too!) There were so many other places we could explore we didn’t even notice! It was a gorgeous day with patchy clouds and a gentle sea breeze. The sun came out to play for a while creating a magical golden glow. We all had so much fun soaking in the beauty during this Iceland engagement session!

Love these! Nice to see some sunlight at a usually pretty overcast and moody location. It totally transforms the location and lifts the photos to another level. Well done Capturing it all for this lucky couple!
