You’ve seen the epic photos on social media and fallen in love with the idea of eloping in Yosemite National Park. This park is one of the natural jewels of California and it is also a stunning choice for your wedding “venue.” However, with elevations spanning from just 2000 ft to over 13000 ft, conditions can vary drastically on the same day let alone in the same season. So when is the best time of year to elope in Yosemite?
It depends… on what kind of experience you’re looking for! The nice thing is that all four seasons in Yosemite are beautiful options. Here’s a full breakdown of each season and what I love/don’t love about each one.

Winter Elopements in Yosemite
Winter in Yosemite is truly a magical experience. The crisp air creates lots of fog in the valley making everything cozy and feel cinematic. When it snows, the blankets of white make the whole area look like a painting.
Pros of Winter in Yosemite
- Cozy, winter-wonderland vibes
- More fog typically making a great cinematic and epic atmosphere photos
- Cold weather leads naturally to a more cuddly, connected time together
- Way less visitors to the park – it can feel like you have it to yourselves!
Cons of Winter in Yosemite
- Many roads are closed including those to Taft Point, Glacier Point, and the Yosemite high country
- Can be extremely cold – not a good choice if you’re sensitive to low temperatures
- Waterfalls are hit or miss. Typically snow is accumulating, not melting/flowing down the falls
- Limited park services

Spring Elopements in Yosemite
Spring is the best time of year in Yosemite for waterfalls and wildflowers! However, based on the winter that precedes it, spring in Yosemite can arrive at varying times year to year. In a typical year, the earliest you could really expect springtime conditions is end of April, with May and June displaying more typical spring characteristics.
Pros of Spring in Yosemite
- Waterfalls are roaring! This is the absolute best time of year to see the Yosemite waterfalls!
- Wildflowers and lush forests. The whole park is vividly alive, with alpine wildflower blooms happening typically mid-May through June
- This is a perfect time of year to backpack up to Taft and/or Glacier Points and have the area completely to yourselves. Roads don’t open until after Memorial Day.
- Perfect weather in the park; comfortable days and cool nights
Cons of Spring in Yosemite
- Spring in Yosemite can arrive at different times year to year and can be somewhat hard to predict
- There can be a risk of flooding in the Yosemite valley depending on how much snow the park got in the winter
- The high country roads don’t open until after Memorial Day (typically). Tioga Pass to the Yosemite high country takes longer to open.
- Risk of muddy/wet trails, and sometimes trail closures if there are safety concerns (flooding, erosion, etc.)

Summer Elopements in Yosemite
Summer in Yosemite can see millions of visitors to the park. My first visit to Yosemite as a kid was in the summer – and I hated it. There were so many people it didn’t feel like a “nature escape” any more. That being said, there are some benefits to summer elopements!
Pros of Summer in Yosemite
- Comfortable, warmer weather in the park day and night
- Typically clear conditions typically making it a great option for stargazing
- Summer is one of the best times for elopements in the Yosemite high country. This area of the park is relatively unknown compared to the sites you see on TikTok
- All roads are open! You can visit every area of the park in the summer from Sequoias to trailheads for popular peaks and lakes
Cons of Summer in Yosemite
- Incredibly crowded. Expect traffic at entrance stations, limited parking, and crowds of people most everywhere. Park info on traffic here.
- Accommodations/camping within the Valley and Yosemite West can book out months in advance. You’ll have to plan for travel time from one of the further out areas or towns if you miss booking windows
- Elopement ceremony permits are not available for certain iconic locations in July and August (due to crowds)
- Risk of wildfire smoke and/or summer storms

Autumn Elopements in Yosemite
If I was planning my own elopement in Yosemite, I think autumn would be my go-to season! (Spring is second!) It’s much quieter in the park as most people return to school and work. The weather is my idea of perfect: warm during the day, crisp in the evening. Plus, when the trees turn fall colors it’s absolutely magical!
Pros of Autumn in Yosemite
- Perfect weather for your elopement and adventuring in the park before/after. Lower risk of storms, but fog starts showing up in certain locations giving a cozy feel
- Roads to iconic locations are still open late into the fall depending on when the first snowfall happens
- Autumn colors! Need I say more… These typically happen mid to late October
- Lowest crowds of the year. Iconic locations are typically more available for permits
Cons of Autumn in Yosemite
- The Yosemite waterfalls are sad in the autumn haha. They’re often only a trickle this time of year.
- Fall colors are unpredictable. Timing of when they’re on full display is different year to year
- Wildfire smoke can still be an issue in the autumn
- Later into the fall it can be very cold at higher elevations (like Glacier or Taft Points) around sunrise/sunset
- You can often run into multiple other eloping couples at popular locations in the fall
